Why do so many businesses struggle with ramping up sales?

It’s because they’re pitching, not educating. Seems obvious, right? Wrong.

Comparing notes with one of my sales guru pals, Chet Holmes, I knew I had to write this blog.

Let’s say you sell telephone systems, like Company X does. Company X practiced sales by cold calling prospective companies to ask if they were interested in talking about a new telephone system (yuck—this is a standard product pitch). They had four salespeople making hundreds of calls per day. The result? A whopping three appointments per week. Ack.

First of all, every company that has a phone system more than five years old could benefit from a new phone system. Heck, more than 15 of the major providers of phone systems from just 10 years ago are now out of the phone system business. But inertia is a powerful force–and the enemy of business building and good choices. If the phone system isn’t broke—why fix it?

Ready to double sales? Consider taking the following steps.

Step 1. The first thing Company X did after discovering the education-based marketing concept was target bigger companies. The bigger the company, the bigger the phone system. The bigger the phone system, the bigger the sales potential.

Step 2. The salespeople called the 2,000 largest companies in their market with two simple questions: “Hi, we’re doing our annual telephone system survey. I just need to know two things: What is the model of your phone system and how old is it?” In two days, the salespeople had a list of 508 companies with old and often obsolete phone systems.

Step 3. Now for the best part: Education-based marketing. The sales reps called on these larger companies with one offer: “We have a new educational program entitled The Nine Ways You’re Wasting Money on Your Voice and Data Spending.” They continued, saying: “We’ve been in the telephone business for 10 years now, and we’ve found that every company wastes money on voice and data spending in at least nine areas. We’ve put together a white paper to teach companies how to stop wasting—and start saving–money. If you ever need any help at all with your voice, data or telephone system needs, we want you to know about us. So we’re sending you our white paper.”

This approach increased their appointments ten fold, from three per week to 30 per week. This company’s revenue was $3 million the year prior to using the education-based marketing approach. After six months, Company X’s sales pipeline was $9 million strong. I’ve used these techniques for companies much larger—in the ten and hundreds of millions in revenue. They’re solid.

To drive my point home about the power of education-based marketing, let’s review a few ineffective education-based marketing approaches, alongside more effective ones.

Combining data from the business phone system with data from front and back office systems enables staffing firms to run their business by the numbers

M5 Networks, the market leader in cloud communications for business, and InsightSquared, the leading provider of business intelligence software for small and medium-sized businesses, announced a partnership recently at the 2012 Staffing Industry Analysts Executive Forum in Las Vegas, NV.

As a result of the partnership, M5′s customers will be able to manage their data generated from M5 alongside data from other systems, such as their applicant tracking system, in InsightSquared’s business intelligence product, empowering decision makers to make better, data-driven decisions in order to improve efficiency and increase revenue.

“Like most small and medium-sized businesses, staffing and recruiting firms generate large amounts of data from their business applications, such as their phone system and applicant tracking system. Decision makers at these firms need an easy way to not only manage all of this data, but to also analyze this data efficiently in order to make better business decisions,” said Fred Shilmover, CEO and co-founder at InsightSquared. “Our ground-breaking business intelligence product, which we have tailored specifically for the staffing and recruiting industry, aggregates all of this data and makes it easier to quickly identify the actionable items that will move the needle.”

The combined solution will help customers:

Manage data from the business phone system and other applications, such as the applicant tracking system, in one easy to use interface

Visualize trends in voice and data to understand the “why” of spikes and valleys in activity

Save time, effort and money by eliminating the need to manually generate reports or hire data analysts

Identify actions that will positively impact efficiency and revenue

“M5 is committed to helping companies bridge the gap between the telephone and critical business applications like the applicant tracking system,” said Brent Barbara, VP of Innovation and Integration for M5 Networks. “Our partnership with InsightSquared is part of our vision to improve a system’s data and analytics, while at the same time satisfying the users’ need for speed and ease of use. Harmonious integration of the telephone and applicant tracking system isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ for companies that want to increase placements and improve support performance, it’s a non-negotiable requirement.”

Joint clients are excited about the partnership. “At Hobson Associates, we have valued the technologies that both InsightSquared and M5 have been providing to us standalone, so we are extremely excited about this partnership,” said Lisa Iannone, Vice President and Senior Partner at Hobson Associates. “Hobson is a metrics-driven company, and as a result of this integration, we will now have a comprehensive analytics solution that allows us to more effectively and efficiently manage our business and drive revenue.” For more information, visit www.m5.net and www.insightsquared.com.

The integrated solution will be available in Q2 2012.

QUEENSLAND’S landmark floods commission has taken aim at the general insurer CGU, raising doubts over crucial assessments the insurer relied on in knocking back customer claims for flood damage.

CGU, a unit of Insurance Australia Group, has also been singled out for its poor co-operation with the $15 million flood commission, being labelled as being “neither careful nor diligent” in its responses to questions while concerns were raised over the accuracy of some answers.

The criticism comes amid plans outlined by IAG earlier this month to cut 600 jobs from CGU over three years as part of a restructure of the business that specialises in selling insurance to small- and mid-sized business customers.

The commission noted the heavy reliance by CGU on its loss assessors in deciding whether damage was due to riverine or storm water flooding, rather than using expert hydrologists. At the time of the disaster, many insurers, including CGU, did not cover for flooding from rivers.

In at least one case rejected by CGU, an independent hydrologist used by the commission said information provided by the assessor was “barely sufficient” to support a conclusion that flooding caused damage.

“Any decision to deny a claim based solely on a loss assessor’s opinion or advice that flood had caused the damage would be questionable,” the commission said. At the same time the commission narrowed-in on CGU’s efforts by determining whether flood damage occurred in getting staffers to ask customers 15 questions over the telephone rather than a site visit. About 340 claims were denied over the telephone.

A CGU spokesman said the insurer had since overhauled its claims, customer communications and dispute systems. Since last month CGU had started providing automatic flood cover to policyholders, he added.

“Every insurance company learnt a lot from the floods – in our case we resolved up to 5000 claims at once,” the spokesman said.

In total, more than 58,400 claims commercial and household claims were made as a result of flooding that swept Queensland early last year. With insured losses of $2.4 billion this made it one of Australia’s most costly insurance events.

While intense focus was put on insurers resisting flood claims at the time, figures compiled by the commission show the nation’s eight biggest insurers accepted 73 per cent of claims.

Brisbane-based Suncorp, which provided automatic flood cover at the time, was the most supportive of claims, rejecting just 2 per cent. This was followed by AAMI, owned by Suncorp, which knocked back 23 per cent of claims, while CGU rejected 27 per cent.

QBE emerged as one of the toughest on terms of insurance, knocking back nearly two-thirds of total claims from customers. This has also led to QBE having the highest proportion of claims that were subject to a dispute, the commission found.

The commission called on insurers to tell policyholders who have had their claims denied what information the insurer had relied on in making its decision.

The Insurance Council of Australia noted the industry had already made substantive changes that addressed key concerns listed in the report. “Insurers are also pleased that the commission noted the extreme pressures the industry was under in January last year and that it had performed well under the circumstances,” the council’s chief executive, Rob Whelan, said.

Bell Canada’s deal to buy Astral Media Inc. is just one in a long list of deals made by communications giants in Canada that add up to billions of dollars. Here’s a look at some of the bigger industry shifts in recent years.

Last year, Rogers and Bell pooled their resources and bought a majority stake in Canada’s biggest sports franchise company, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The two companies, fierce rivals in the business of cellphone and internet services, each paid the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan about $533 million for a 37.5 per cent chunk of the sports ownership company. MLSE owns the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors and Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC.

In 2010, Rogers bought Ontario newtwork operator Atria Networks. The Kitchener, Ont.-based company is considered a fibre-optic asset and has more than 1,000 clients in the public sector and in small to medium-sized businesses. Atria was purchased for about $425 million.

In 2010, Bell aquired Quebec-based Hypertec Availability Service’s data hosting division in a move to expand Bell’s data hosting servies for government and corporate clients.

In 2009, Telus acquired Black’s Photo Corporation, a national imaging and digital retailer. Black’s was established in the 1930s and offers printing services, digital camera equipment and accessories, as well as frames and albums. The deal was worth approximately $28 million.

In 2009, Bell bought 750 Canadian The Source stores to enhance the growth of its wireless, digital TV, internet and home phone services. The consumer electronics retailer operated as Radio Shack in Canada until 2005.

In 2008, Telus merged with Emergis, an electronic health-care solutions provider. Emergis is involved with health-related claims processing, health record systems and pharmacy management, among other services. The company works with insurance companies, financial institutions hospitals and corporations in Canada.

In 2007, Rogers Media paid $375 million for five Citytv stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The stations were initially part of CTVglobemedia’s $1.7-billion purchase of CHUM Ltd. but the CRTC ordered the sale of the Citytv stations because of competition concerns.

In 2004, Rogers bought Microsell Telecommunications, the operator of the Fido cellphone network. The friendly takeover was worth about $1.4 billion.

In 2004, Telus merged with Adcom, a Canadian videoconferencing company, in a transaction listed at slightly less than $15 million. Adcom creates videoconferencing products like integrated boardrooms and theatres.

In 1999, Altantic Canadian companies Island Telecom, Bruncor, NewTel Enterprises and Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Company merged to form Aliant. Then in 2006, Bell and Aliant merged operations.

Businesses want your opinion of them, too, and their requests for feedback, like relentless tugs on the sleeve, now seem to come with every purchase, every call to a customer service department and every click of a mouse that is followed with a pop-up ad pleading with users to take a survey about the “Web site experience.”

On the telephone, in the mail, on their computers, smartphones and iPads, American consumers are being solicited as never before to express their feelings about coffeemakers, hand creams, triple-bypass operations, veterinarians, dry cleaners and insurance agents.

One reason is that software companies like SurveyGizmo and QuestionPro have made it possible for small companies to create customer surveys at a fraction of the cost of traditional surveys done by established research companies. Businesses of all sizes, desperate to lock in customer loyalty, see surveys as a window into the emotional world of their customers and a database that will offer guidance on how to please them.

“It’s like the gold rush now,” said Jonathan D. Barsky, a founder of Market Metrix, which develops systems for measuring customer satisfaction in the hospitality industry. “Anyone who can craft a customer survey and throw it on the Internet is doing it.”

There is no way to determine exactly how many consumer satisfaction surveys are completed each year, but Mindshare Technologies, a small company that conducts and analyzes on-the-spot electronic surveys, says it completes 175,000 surveys every day, or more than 60 million annually.

ForeSee, an offshoot of the American Customer Satisfaction Index in Ann Arbor, Mich., a company that measures consumer sentiment about business and government, says it collected 15 million surveys in 2011.

Consumer patience may be fraying under the onslaught. The constant nagging has led to a condition known as survey fatigue and declining response rates over the last decade.

“The frequent requests to fill out these surveys, especially with no incentives, have been so annoying that people just stop doing it,” said Richard L. Oliver, a professor of management at Vanderbilt University and the author of the textbook “Satisfaction: A Behavioral Perspective on the Consumer” (McGraw Hill, 1996). “In the old days, you felt as though you had been selected to represent the community, or even the nation. But this is the information age, and people know their information is worth something.”

If customers balk at taking what can feel like an SAT test, the fault may lie with the surveys themselves. Many businesses, often against the advice of the experts they have hired to construct their questionnaires, cannot resist the urge to ask, ask and ask yet again. Exasperated consumers, assured that the survey will take only five minutes to complete, often bail out as they approach the 10-minute mark.

Kimberly Nasief, the owner of Measure Consumer Perspectives, a company that sends mystery shoppers into stores, fills out customer satisfaction surveys out of professional interest. She recently wrote a screed on her blog, Service Witch, about the excessive length and lack of focus in most online surveys.

“The one that broke my back was a survey for Babies ‘R’ Us,” she said in an interview. “I wrote a blog entry, ‘Infant Who Begins Babies “R” Us Customer Satisfaction Survey Dies of Old Age.’ ”

In an act of revenge, she has posted videos on YouTube showing the painful process of filling out her least favorite surveys, from Walmart, Wendy’s, Continental Airlines, and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores — this last is an epic requiring two videos.

To counter survey fatigue, companies are pressing consumers with renewed urgency. On their register receipts, stores like Walmart, Petco and Rite Aid include a Web address and an invitation to fill out a survey, with the chance to win a prize. At Staples, the prize is a $5,000 store card.

In the auto industry, which tries to measure customer satisfaction at every possible stage, from the first tentative Web search to the last service visit, the assessment ritual can become a kind of performance.

Sales representatives have been known to show pictures of their wives and children as they plead for a favorable review in their dealership’s satisfaction survey. Some show their customers a sample survey already ticked off with top marks in every rating category. Dealers sometimes throw in a free tank of gas or a free oil change as a quid pro quo.
